Girl Crazy
The musical that contains many of Gershwin’s best known songs. It was remade later on Broadway as “Crazy for You.”
PLOT:
Rich kid Danny Churchill has a taste for wine, women and song, but not for higher education. So his father ships him to an all-male college out West where there’s not supposed to be a female for miles. But before Danny arrives, he spies a pair of legs extending out from under a stalled roadster. They belong to the Dean’s granddaughter, Ginger Gray, who is more interested in keeping the financially strapped college open than falling for Danny’s romantic line. At least at first…
REVIEW:
I was, for the most part, entertained by this movie. Having watched “Crazy for You” in college, when I picked this one out of the list, I thought that’s what this was. Disappointed that it wasn’t, but hey, beggars can’t be choosy, right.
I’m surprised that Mickey Rooney was as good as he was, especially since he’s so old now. Judy Garland, is…well, Judy Garland. I kinda thought she was under used in her part, especially for her talent, but, if I’m not mistaken, this is before Wizard of Oz and many of her bigger roles.
The film does lag in quite a few places, which is never a good thing. Also, there are some holes in the plot, but considering when it was released, you can’t really hold that against them.
Musical fans should definitely go check it out.
