Plump Fiction

PLOT:

A riotous parody based on director Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction plays out a disjointed movie script by oddball screenwriter Bunny Roberts (Sandra Bernhard). Led by Julie Brown, an assortment of twisted characters appears from memorable Hollywood films — including Reservoir Dogs, Natural Born Killers, Clerks and Nell — that have absolutely nothing in common. A bonus short blends two unlikely collaborators: Sling Blade and Swingers.

REVIEW:

The cast of this film is mostly unknowns and has beens, but there are some “stars” that surprised me with their appearance on camera. Most notable of these are Dan Castallaneta and Pamela Adlon(or Segall), better known to most people as the voices of Homer Simpson and Bobby Hill, respectively. Adlon really impressed me with her acting chops as well as her appearance. Who knew Bobby Hill looked like that?

Julie Brown leads this cast, without a doubt, and is a definitive bright spot of the film as Mimi Hungry.

Tommy Davidson is no Samuel L. Jackson, and I still wonder why he is using his Sammy Davis, Jr. impression in the car at the beginning of the film. It makes no sense to me.

Many of the jokes in the film work best if you’ve seen the films they’re parodying, otherwise they’re lost on you.

Pulp Fiction is one of my all time favorite films, so you can imagine how much I was looking forward to seeing a good parody of it. Unfortunately, this was not that film. There are quite a few good moments, don’t get me wrong, but the writing kills it. Parody films haven’t been the same since the first couple of Scary Movies. If they are going to write a parody, then they need to go back and use those or the majority of Mel Brooks’ films as references.
